Media Analysis: Second Quarter 2009
During the second quarter of 2009, electric drive vehicles and technology continued to command considerable media attention across a range of print, online and broadcast outlets. The frequency and range of stories demonstrates the high profile attention being paid to the electric drive industry. Media Analysis: First Quarter 2009
During the first three months of 2009, electric drive vehicles and technology generated significant news coverage, particularly among “agenda-setting” news outlets such as the Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, USA Today, Washington Post and BusinessWeek. New hybrids and electric vehicles dominated the coverage at this year’s Detroit International Auto Show in January, creating significant interest in industry developments.
Into February and March, news coverage focused more on the state of battery development and the funding for electric drive and batteries in the “stimulus” bill passed by Congress and signed by President Obama. Overall, most of the coverage during this period carried a neutral tone, offering a balanced perspective of pros and cons.
This news coverage analysis represents a sampling of media articles and reports from top tier, trade and local outlets. It is not intended to provide an exhaustive listing of all coverage. During this period, the state of the U.S. auto industry and the government loans to GM and Chrysler received significant coverage. The analysis details some of the more important topics covered, organizations quoted most often, EDTA citations and key issues. Below are some observations and recommendations based on the analysis.
