Daimler
Daimler’s road map for sustainable transportation is comprised of optimizing combustion engines, increasing the use of alternate fuels, and achieving emission-free driving with fuels cells and battery-driven vehicles. One example of an activity in this area is the current electric drive test fleet running in London. 100 Smart EV vehicles are being tested under real world conditions by select customers. Compact cars such as the Smart fortwo EV are particularly suited to congested urban areas. Fuel cell technology has the greatest potential in terms of emission free driving – not only in urban areas, but also for longer distances. At the end of 2007, Daimler’s worldwide fuel cell fleet of over 100 vehicles had accumulated more than 2.35 million miles and 180,400 hours of operation. In 2010, the new generation fuel cell drive with considerably improved performance characteristics will be launched in the B-Class F-Cell – the first fuel cell vehicle produced under series production conditions.
